Eco-Friendly Moving: How to Make Your Wellington Move Sustainable

As the world turns to greener policies, most of us do what we can to help the environment. Whether it’s little things like composting or only buying organic soaps, or big commitments like investing in solar panels or a zero-emission vehicle, every little thing counts and, together, we can work towards a healthier planet.

There’s no wonder that you’re wanting to make moving houses a sustainable operation. Moving homes has the potential to use an unnecessary amount of precious resources, which we want to keep to a minimum.

Here, New Zealand Movers tell us about eco-friendly moving in Wellington and how to make your moving experience more sustainable.

Choose a moving company with updated trucks

Choosing a moving company who updates their trucks is one way to make your Wellington move more sustainable. In 2018, 43% of New Zealand’s total CO2 emissions were caused by road transport, including light and heavy duty trucks. However, newer trucks can be far more fuel-efficient than old ones, having come a long way in fuel conservation.

Therefore, by choosing a moving company who invests in new trucks with less fuel consumption, you can make your Wellington move more sustainable. New Zealand Movers boast a fleet of new trucks with excellent fuel mileage, so you can get where you’re going in an eco-friendly way.

Recycled cardboard boxes

Using recycled cardboard boxes is another way to reduce your carbon footprint when moving in Wellington, making for an eco-friendly move. Recycling at home is one of the best things we can do for sustainability on an individual level. When you move, however, you’re likely to use a lot more resources than you normally would. New Zealand Movers use cardboard boxes that are recycled, so you can use them guilt-free.

Limiting the load

Limiting your load by getting rid of unwanted items before moving is another great commitment to a sustainable move in Wellington. The less you travel with, the less space you need, meaning you might only need a light truck rather than a full-size one which spares carbon emissions. We’re not saying you have to get rid of everything you own, but if there’s something like clothes or a piece of furniture you’re thinking of donating or selling, it’s worthwhile to do this before the move.

Donating unwanted goods to charities or placing them for sale on online marketplaces is a great way to limit your load for an eco-friendly move in Wellington.

Choosing the Best Movers in Wellington: Key Factors to Consider

Moving houses is a significant occasion, but with house moving in New Zealand at an all-time high, it can be difficult to find a high-quality moving team that has availability. Getting in early and booking a date is essential to securing excellent movers, with around 1000 moves taking place in New Zealand each day.

Choosing the best team of movers in Wellington depends on a range of key factors, from experience to skills to quotes. Here, we outline key factors to consider when choosing the best movers in Wellington:

Residential, commercial, or international?

When you’re choosing the best movers in Wellington, make sure to assess their skills and whether they’re qualified to handle your type of move. Whether you’re locally moving houses or businesses or, conducting an international move, your movers should be qualified to handle your move. New Zealand Movers offer international relocations, business relocations and house moving services too, as we’ve established a reputation for excellence in all three categories of moving.

An experienced team

Experience is something we should look for in all service providers, from movers to mechanics to hairdressers and more. An experienced moving team knows what they’re doing in terms of packing, storing, and unpacking your belongings.

This is because they’ve been professionally trained by a team who has had continual progress and experience in the industry. New Zealand Movers have over 40 years of experience in moving houses in Wellington and beyond, making us one of the country’s most experienced teams. Navigating International Relocations: A Comprehensive Guide from Wellington to the World

Moving overseas from Wellington is an exciting time, but given the gravity of this life-changing moment, it’s imperative that we plan it carefully. International relocations are huge moments in our lives. We’re packing up everything we own and moving it across the world. So, when you’re moving from Wellington to another part of the world, how can you best ensure a smooth, successful relocation?

The team at New Zealand Movers have the answers. Here is a comprehensive guide for moving from Wellington to the world:

  • Preparing for the move
Preparing for an international relocation requires a lot of research. We have to understand the country we’re moving to and the requirements they have of New Zealanders. Visas, work permits, job offers, banking and medical systems are all at the top of the list. You also have to know what documents are required when you apply for your visa, i.e. birth certificates, government-issued IDs, police checks. Make sure you’re prepared for the move by researching in-depth the documents you need.
  • Housing and accommodation
Finding somewhere to live is the next step when moving from Wellington. Many Kiwis choose to find temporary accommodation in their new country like hotels or Airbnbs before searching for a place to live long term when they arrive. If you require storage either in New Zealand or overseas during the moving process, New Zealand Movers can assist.
  • Logistics
And now, the fun part! New Zealand Movers is here to ship or air freight your belongings from Wellington to overseas. We recommend using our packing services, as international moving requires specific packing methods for a secure move. Your belongings have thousands of kilometers to travel, and even one mistake can affect multiple belongings, possibly resulting in damage.
  • Education opportunities
If you’re travelling with young children, their education is paramount. Make sure you’ve done your research on areas with good schools, public or private, and if you’re moving somewhere where English isn’t the primary language, you may like to investigate international schools.
  • Employment
Whether you’re moving with a pre-guaranteed job offer, or looking for work when you arrive, both are viable options. If taking the second route, make sure you have enough savings to sustain you while you’re looking for work.
  • Healthcare
Navigating the healthcare system of your new country is another important aspect of moving overseas. In Wellington, New Zealand, our healthcare system is easy to use; it may not be the case in the country you’re moving to. Become familiar with their protocols before you arrive.

New Zealand Movers are Wellington’s best team of international movers. We have over 40 years’ experience in international moves and have moved Kiwis to and from every corner of the globe. Top Destinations to Move to in the South Island

Looking for somewhere with affordable housing, job opportunities galore and a safe environment to raise your children? The South Island is an exciting, beautiful and liveable place that ticks all of these boxes.

Each part of the island has its own unique charm. From the bustling streets of Christchurch to the action and adventure of Queenstown, the South Island presents a range of different lifestyle choices for every different type of person and family.

Here, we ask the experts at New Zealand Movers about the top destinations to move to in New Zealand’s beautiful South Island.

Christchurch

New Zealand’s second largest city is an interesting mix of mountains, beaches, rivers and cosmopolitan living. Like most of the South Island, Christchurch has a serious advantage in terms of house prices. For example, while the median house price in Auckland is now over $1mil, the Canterbury region has a median house price of just $680k. Quite the difference! Still in the rebuilding phase from the 2011 earthquakes, Christchurch is a fast-growing city with job opportunities in IT, technology and construction.

Dunedin

Dunedin is an underrated gem on the South Island. A university city, it’s the perfect place for students thanks to the highly-esteemed University of Otago, ranked in the world’s top 1% of universities. It’s also home to a distinct mix of Scottish and Maori culture, with beautiful Victorian and Edwardian architecture. Dunedin is known for its strong job market in the areas of education, healthcare and professional services.

Nelson

Art galleries, wineries, mountains, beaches – this compact little jewel facing Tasman Bay is one of the best cities to live in on the South Island. Nelson is home to New Zealand’s biggest fishing port, meaning that well-paid jobs in fishing and agriculture attract many new locals each year. One of New Zealand’s safest cities, Nelson is a great place for children to grow up, and go hiking and swimming on the weekends.

Wanaka

Snow-capped mountains and huge alpine lakes mark the resort town of Wanaka in Otago. The gateway to the Southern Alps, it’s a popular town in winter due to alpine sports. Wanaka is a fantastic place to live for those in tourism and alpine education, presenting a safe and interesting place for children to grow up.

No matter where you decide is the right place on the South Island for you and your family to move to, make sure you pick a trusted moving service like New Zealand Movers. How To Prepare Your Move In 10 Easy Steps

Moving homes can seem like a big task – especially if you’re right at the start of the process. But the truth is, with the right game-plan, moving homes is a simple, straightforward process which we’re confident you’ll succeed in.

Here, the expert moving company, New Zealand Movers, outlines 10 easy steps to prepare your move, breaking up that hill into small, achievable stages.

1. Make a timeline

Outline each task in a calendar so that you can visualise the timeline of your move. This will help reaching your goals on time.

2. Start purging your belongings

Moving house is the perfect chance to get rid of some items you simply don’t use or need anymore. You can start doing this weeks or even months ahead of the move.

3. Rug cleaning

If you’ve got rugs and carpets that haven’t been cleaned in a while, it’s a good idea to have them professionally cleaned before moving house. Don’t transfer all that dust and dirt from your old home to your new one!

4. Hire your movers

Hire your movers early. Good quality movers tend to book out quickly, so it’s best to hire your preferred movers at least six weeks before moving day.

5. Cleaning the new home

Before you’ve got the obstructions of furniture and personal belongings in your new home, it’s certainly smart to clean it while it’s empty. This allows you to get into all the nooks and crannies with ease.

6. Schedule utilities for the new place

There’s nothing worse than thinking you’ve absolutely had a successful move and when you go to turn the lights on in your new place, nothing happens. Schedule utilities well before moving day.

7. Pack an essentials bag

Not everything in your home will be going into the moving van. Keep your essentials like medications, phone, wallet, keys, etc. in a separate bag to take with you.

8. Make the most of services offered by your moving company

Enlist some help with packing and unpacking if your moving company can do this for you. New Zealand Movers offer packing, unpacking, storage and pet transport to make your life easier.

9. Notifying change of address

Now it’s time to spread the word about your change of address. Inform your government services, friends, family, utility providers and any other stakeholders that you’re moving homes.

10. Making your house a home

Your furniture is all set up and it’s time to unpack while making your house a home. Light a candle, place your photos around the house, and treat yourself to some new houseplants.

Dunedin Landmarks

Breaking New Ground in Dunedin

It was this time last year that we celebrated the significant milestone of 40 years in business. One year on and New Zealand Movers are thrilled to share the exciting news of a new world-class moving and storage facility being constructed in Dunedin.

From humble beginnings New Zealand Movers have grown into one of NZ’s prominent providers of moving and storage services with the team who are “Passionate About Moving!”

New Zealand Movers has had a presence in Dunedin for the last 15 years, servicing the Otago region with local household relocations, intercity moving, exports, and imports to New Zealand for thousands of customers.

Building a Solid Future

The decision for a new warehouse and storage facility is due to the changing logistics of household moving within New Zealand. This has evolved with New Zealand Movers completing significantly more relocations by road in our special high cube containers, meaning we require large yards to handle our New Zealand container fleet, and international container volumes. Our current facility in Bridgman Street, we have simply outgrown, and need to invest in the future growth of our business and Dunedin now.

Location, Location

NZ Movers Dunedin ‘state of the art’ branch is being built at 1 Odlins Place, Mosgiel. Selecting our new location was challenging. Dunedin has very limited options of greenfield development freehold land centrally, so it was logical to look to the significant expansion and development taking place in Mosgiel, which is situated less than 30 km from Port Otago and a very short drive via highway from Dunedin’s CBD. The site will now sit across the road from the proposed Otago inland port facility, which will put us in a prime position.

New Build Project Update

NZM Dunedin Facility On Page

Planning of the new build started in early 2021, with building consent finally being obtained in Q3, 2022 and construction on site commencing in November ‘22. We are over halfway through the development which boosts a modern high stud design with solar power, LED lighting and weather protection canopies for unloading containers. Completion is scheduled for May this year.

Keep posted for further updates.

5 Top Reasons To Move To Canada

Oh, Canada! Oh, Canada! Thinking of packing up your life in New Zealand and moving far away to the Great White North? Relocating to Canada is something many Kiwis dream of doing, attracted by the great quality of life, big and vibrant cities, and suitability for family life.

So, before you’re making snow angels in your backyard, let’s talk about some of the other big drawcards of moving to Canada. The experts at New Zealand Movers, who have helped hundreds of Kiwi families pack up and head to Canada, explain the 5 top reasons to jump ship!

1. Loads of job opportunities

Canada has plenty of job opportunities, across a wider range of industries than here in New Zealand. From high-paying mining jobs to manufacturing to real estate to oil and gas, Canada’s job opportunities are abundant in each state.

Alberta is Canada’s biggest province for oil, gas and mining, and many Kiwis in these industries head there for generous salaries and a perfect life for family. Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta’s two biggest cities, consistently rank in the top 8 cities for quality of life in Canada, with an affordable cost of living and a wide range of recreational activities, too.

2. Time for exploring

If there’s one thing you picture when you think of Canada, it’s probably snow and all the related activities that go with it! Every province and territory in Canada experiences snowy winters, giving you and the family a chance to live your best lives as snow bunnies. Skiing, snowboarding, sledding, and snowman building are all common weekend activities for families across Canada.

3. Top educational facilities

Canada consistently ranks within the top 10 countries for education in the world, meaning your children will have excellent learning opportunities. For example, as French is an official language of Canada, every student learns French in school. But French classes aren’t just limited to school kids; in Quebec, for example, the government actually pays work visa holders to learn French. Getting paid to learn another language is a pretty great deal, right?

4. It’s easy to do

New Zealand and Canada are both part of the Commonwealth, and this makes it easy for Kiwis to move to Canada. Obtaining a Canadian work permit is a simple process which can almost entirely be done online, and costs around $300. So, if you’re wanting a change of pace, but don’t want to go through an overly bureaucratic process, moving to Canada is an awesome choice.

5. There’s something for everyone

Canada has something, or somewhere, for everyone. The world-class ski slopes and hiking tracks of Vancouver, the bustling streets with bars and cafes in Montreal, the charming old town of Quebec City, the fast-paced economic hub of Toronto… it’s all happening in Canada.

New Zealand Movers are your first choice team for moving to Canada. Having moved countless Kiwi families to many different Canadian cities, they’re experienced in international relocations and offer stress-free moves at competitive prices. Request a free, no obligation moving quote today.

Moving to Australia From NZ Checklist

Thinking of making the move across the ditch? Moving in with our Aussie cousins is something many Kiwis choose to do, attracted by greater job prospects, lower cost of living, and a close proximity to friends and family back home. It’s a decision you certainly won’t regret!

So, what are some of the things you need to do before you make the big move to Australia from New Zealand? Here, the experts at New Zealand Movers, who have over 40 years of experience in moving Kiwis across the Tasman, outline a detailed checklist when moving to Australia from NZ.

Moving to Australia from New Zealand Checklist:

1. Secure the necessary visa

The first thing on your NZ-to-AUS checklist is securing a visa. Kiwis have it relatively easy in this department; all New Zealand citizens are eligible for the Special Category Visa which allows us to work and live in Australia as long as we like.

2. Find a job

It’s always easier to move to Australia from NZ when you’ve lined up a job on the other side first. Not only will this give you peace of mind regarding a financial safety net, but your new employer may also be able to cover part of the cost of moving, flights, etc.

3. Choosing the right city

Australia is a big place, and with remote work becoming more and more common, you may have significantly wider options for choosing where you’re going to live. More than 85% of the population lives within 50km of the coast. Major cities like Sydney and Melbourne are renowned for their coastlines, but smaller, arguably undervalued cities like Coffs Harbour and Townsville also have their fair share of amazing beaches.

4. Find short-term accommodation

It’s always best to lock in short-term housing in your city of choice, so that you can be present at inspections of homes for sale or rent. We never advise buying or leasing a home, sight unseen.

5. Book your moving company

Once all your ducks are in a row, it’s time to book a slot with New Zealand Movers. They move you anywhere in Australia and guarantee a stress-free moving experience.

6. Convert some NZD to AUD

There are some great money conversion providers out there these days, like XE. Make sure you research this aspect on your own and choose a provider you’re happy with.

What to do once you’ve arrived

Once you’ve arrived in Australia from New Zealand, you have to:

1. Sign up to Medicare

Medicare is Australia’s government healthcare program. Kiwis can access the program once they’ve moved to Australia. You’ll have to head to a Medicare office in person, and bring your passport along.

2. Apply for a TFN

Once you’ve landed in Australia and you’ve sorted yourself out, you can apply for an Aussie Tax File Number here.

New Zealand Movers are the team to call when you’re planning to move to Australia. They’re a highly-rated team of professionals in overseas relocations, and have over 40 years’ experience in moving Kiwis to Australia.
